- Fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
- Pain or tenderness over the kidney
- Sudden weight gain (2+ lbs overnight)
- Less urine, dark urine, or blood in urine
- Reduced urine output or unusual pain
- New bleeding from the wound
- Changes in wound drainage color or smell
- Swelling in feet, ankles, or hands
- New cough, sore throat, or cold symptoms
- Diarrhea or vomiting more than once
- Any new rash or open sore
Call 911 immediately for…
- Chest pain or shortness of breath
- Severe abdominal pain
- Confusion or difficulty waking
- Heavy bleeding or fainting
- Signs of stroke: facial droop, weakness on one side, slurred speech
CMV — keep an eye on labs
CMV (cytomegalovirus) is a known complication in 4–14% of transplant patients. Routine labs monitor for it. Report any fever, reduced urine output, or unusual pain to the transplant team immediately.
Avoiding infection
- Wash hands often — especially before meals and meds.
- Avoid crowded indoor spaces during cold/flu season.
- Wear a mask in clinics and on flights.
- Stay current on flu and COVID vaccines (no live vaccines).
- Keep cuts clean and covered.
